Mango export witnesses 36 percent growth (Courtesy Business Recorder)
Pakistan's mango export witnessed a healthy growth of 36 percent during this season compared to same period of last year. Exporters said that over 80,000 tons mango have so far been exported against the targeted 0.1 million tons this year. Mango export posted an increase of 36 percent during this year as compared with the export recorded last year, in which at least 58,000 tons mango was exported. Mango export during this season was even higher than previous year's total export as Pakistan exported some 68,000 tons mango in 2015. Major surge has been witnessed in export of mango to European countries and overall some 8400 tons mango has been exported to EU countries as against 5500 tons of last year, depicting an increase of 52 percent. Mango exporters have also recently organised a mango festival at President House for promotion of mango export. While terming it a milestone development for horticultural industry, Waheed Ahmed, Chairman All Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, Importers, and Merchants Association (PFVA) said that the Mango Festival held at President House recently has increased popularity of the fruit world-wide. Such shows will not only boost the export of the highly valued fruit but also marketing of the value added products which ultimately benefit thousands people associated with the industry from farmers to exporters, he added. He thanked President Mamnoon Hussain for playing his role promotion of the fruit and hosting the mango show at President House where a large number of Islamabad based ambassadors had also attended the ceremony and evinced keen interest in different varieties of mangoes displayed on the occasion. Waheed informed that this was the first-ever mango event held at the President House, displaying over 10 varieties of the Mango and at least 25 value added related products of the fruit including pulps, juices, ice cream etc. The participants had taken keen interests in the products besides enjoying the delicious fruit, he added. Keeping in view the success of the mega show, PFVA has decided to hold the event annually at President House. Next year the show will be organised in July in the beginning of season which will enable the organisers to display 100 to 150 varieties of mango, he said.
