What is PIPIP subsidy plan?


The government of Punjab has launched a mega project titled "Punjab Irrigated-Agriculture Productivity Improvement Project (PIPIP) of worth Rs 36 billon to improve the productivity of the irrigation activities in the Province.

Project Objective:
Main objective of this project is to bring revolutionary change in irrigation sector with an aim of crop per drop which will be achieved through increasing delivery efficiency, adopting improved irrigation practices, promoting crop diversification and effective application of non-water inputs.

Project Location:
This project will cover entire Punjab province over a period of 6 years (2011-12 to 2016-17).

Project Sponsor: The project is sponsored by Government of Punjab through World Bank. Drip and sprinkler irrigated system will be installed on 120,000 acres, 3,000 Laser units will be provided to farmers on subsidized rates and support will be provided to 5,500 unimproved canal irrigated water courses, 1500 improved water courses which need to be improved again and 2,000 new irrigating schemes.

Funding:
60% by World Bank and 40% by farmer

  • Service and Supplier Company (SSC’s)
  • Project Implementation and Supervision Consultants

Project Beneficiaries:
The direct beneficiaries of Project would be about 580,000 farm families or about 4.0 million people all over Punjab. About 17,500 families would be direct beneficiaries of the HEIS systems, about 90,000 families of laser leveling system, and about 475,000 families from the watercourse improvement program. A very large population would be indirect beneficiaries of the Project, about 13 million additional person days of employment as farm labor for agricultural operations. Also employment would be generated through installation of the systems; and private companies would supply materials, help improve watercourses, and gain additional business from the incremental agriculture production.
